Code Enforcement and Inspections

Mission Statement


The Code Enforcement and Inspections Office of the City's Planning and Development Department is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for the citizens of Oakwood, by providing effective public service in the enforcement of City Codes and Ordinances. The Basic responsibility of this office is to ensure that all residences and commercial structures are built to comply with all Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Fire Codes to ensure a safe built environment.

Major Functions


This Office exists not to punish individual property owners, but to maintain the greater good of the community by gaining compliance with adopted codes. The Office of Code Enforcement and Inspections is committed to work with both residences and businesses in a professional and effective manner to ensure that the City Codes and Ordinances are enforced in both residential and commercial areas.
 
Staff members process and issue building permits, investigate customer service requests and reviews/check plans for all construction in the City of Oakwood. This department provides field inspection of projects requiring construction or grading approval and enforces City and State building codes.
 
The Code Enforcement Officer is charged with ensuring compliance with all Ordinances and Codes that are not of a criminal nature. The Office performs residential inspections of all trades in new homes as well as inspections of commercial buildings. Other types of inspections performed by the City include detention ponds, developments, erosion and sediment control, paving, pool and site inspections.
 
The following Codes, designed to protect the health, safety and welfare of its citizens, have been adopted by the City of Oakwood:

  • INTERNATIONAL RESIDENTIAL CODE (IRC) 2006 FOR ONE AND TWO  FAMILY DWELLINGS
  • INTERNATION FIRE CODE (IFC) 2006
  • INTERNATIONAL PLUMBING CODE (IPC) 2006
  • INTERNATIONAL MECHANICAL CODE (IMC) 2006
  • INTERNATIONAL FUEL GAS CODE (IFGC) 2006
  • INTERNATIONAL ENERGY CONSERVATION CODE (IECC) 2000
  • NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE (NEC) 2005

         ALL OF THE ABOVE CODES HAVE GEORGIA AMENDMENTS
